MOD97 and French RIB key
MOD97 is calculated digit by digit without precision loss. For France, the RIB key is also checked after converting account-number letters.
Bank, BIC and SEPA
A bank code is extracted only when the registry specifies its position. Bank names and BICs require a reliable directory. A SEPA country does not guarantee every SEPA service is available for an account.
A valid IBAN is not enough before paying
An invoice can contain a perfectly valid IBAN substituted by a fraudster. Before a payment or change of bank details, verify the company and confirm the payee using an established channel. Executive impersonation also exploits urgency to bypass this step.
Frequently asked questions
How does MOD 97 work?
Move the first four IBAN characters to the end, replace letters with numbers from A=10 to Z=35, then calculate the remainder step by step. A valid checksum yields 1.
Can a valid IBAN be fraudulent?
Yes. The checksum detects certain typing errors but cannot confirm an account exists, is active, or belongs to a named person.
Can SecurCheck identify the bank or account holder?
The national format can expose a bank code where specified by the registry. Without a reliable bank directory or bank-provided name check, we do not name a bank, BIC or holder.
How should I verify changed bank details?
Call the supplier using a number already in your records, compare a trusted earlier invoice, and require an independent second approval.
